초록
We look at the prospects for establishing an East Asian Community (EAC) in this study. Since 1990, the success of European integration has inspired Asians to propose many theories for an East Asian analogue. However, there has been no great success in establishing an EAC, which raises the question of why the EU phenomenon happened and the challenges in applying the European model to East Asia, particularly relative to Northeast Asian countries such as Korea, China and Japan. We argue that these Northeast Asian countries each have a very strong sense of nationalism, which impedes the creation of a sense of East Asian regionalism and a regional identity like that of Europe. We seek to understand East Asian nationalism relative to historical institutionalism, specifically the legacy of Northeast Asian nationalism, while also identifying the characteristics of new types of East Asian nationalism in modern times. To conclude, we express our own perspectives on nationalism, regionalism, regional identity and national identity in the three countries.
