Abstract
The French Green Party (Europe Ecology–The Greens), which succeeded anti-nuclear movements in 1970s, was established as an institutionalized party in the 1990s and recorded an unprecedented growth in the late 2000s. Furthermore, it joined in the cabinet through electoral alliance with the French Socialist Party during the 2012 presidential election. However, the French Green Party faced a sharp decline of election pollin latest election.Although previous studies tended to analyze the growth of the Green Party with the structure of political opportunity, this study focused on the ideological factors regarding party identity to explain its rapid growth and decline. As the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 influenced the French public opinion against nuclear energy, the Energy Transition Law of 2015 co-promoted by the Socialists and Greens received a significant attention from the public. However, the Green Party faced a critical internal division when the French socialist government delayed the closure of Fessenheim reactor and failed to implement nuclear reduction program in time. The case of French Green Party reveals that participation of environmental/ecological party in the cabinet through party coalition does not grantee its sustainable success in the midst of the dilemma between antinuclear platform and real politics.
