Abstract

This study differs from the previous studies in that it analyzes the changes of German politics not by attributing them to the rise of the rightist political parties but by expanding the cause to political polarization as well as analyzing the regional factors. In the past, in Germany, the two parties, the CDU/CSU and the SPD, maintained a 2.5 party system and had the characteristics of party politics with a strong sense of unity and strong ideological tendencies. The cultural factors such as the Nazi experience and the influence of the Cold War and institutional factors such as the containment clause suppressed political ideological polarization. In recent years, however, the factors that inhibit cultural and institutional polarization have weakened, and the two centrist parties have declined, both of which led to the increased approval ratings of Die Linke party and the far-right parties. This change can be analyzed by applying Golder's analysis on the cause of the rise of the extreme right-wing party and of the increasing approval rate of this political party. The ideological centering of the existing two parties and the preoccupation effect of the partisan parties influence the supply-side factors. Demand-side factors seem to be affected by the relative economic deprivation and perceived threats of immigrants and refugees. Region-wise, there is strong political polarization in the former East Germany region due to the accumulation of discrimination.
