Abstract
This article researches the ideology of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), focusing on the basic party platform and the program for the 2017 and 2021 Bundestag elections, and analyzes the impact of its emergence on the ideological spectrum of the German party system. The ideological identity of the AfD, which has changed since the early years of its founding, can be called a populist extreme right-wing or populist radical right-wing in the sense that it is a right wing party that has chosen neo-populism as its main strategy and is floating in extremism and radicalism. The rise of the AfD changed the German party system into a three-dimensional spatial composition by adding a moderate-extreme axis to the two-dimensional flat composition, in which the left-right axis and the materialism-postmaterialism axis intersect. In the three-dimensional space, the AfD competes with the postmaterialistically reradicalized Green Party on the materialism-postmaterialism axis, with the Left Party on the left-right axis, and with other established parties on the moderate-extreme axis.
