Abstract

In recent years, far-right parties in Europe have emerged as transnational political actors who not only contest domestic identity conflicts but also construct geopolitical alternatives through foreign policy discourse and strategic alliances. This paper analyzes how Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) builds its foreign policy identity, engages in cross-border networking, and promotes a form of cultural geopolitics that politicizes existing norms and values within European diplomacy. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study combines discourse analysis of AfD’s official documents, speeches, and social media content with structured data on its institutional and informal transnational activities (e.g., ID Group, CPAC Hungary). It also employs mock-up quantitative visualization techniques and network analysis to identify key patterns. The findings show that AfD’s discourse is anchored in civilizational nationalism, operating simultaneously within institutional platforms and informal populist arenas. Through these practices, AfD redefines national interest and challenges liberal- democratic foreign policy norms, especially in relation to Russia, China, and the EU. This study demonstrates that far-right parties should be analyzed not only as domestic protest actors but also as diplomatic agents that actively reshape the meaning of national interest and conflict. It contributes to the broader understanding of far-right transnationalism and its implications for European order.
