Abstract

This paper seeks to trace and reconstruct the political dynamics of the left-right conflicts and antagonisms during the interwar period, as well as the left-right cooperation following the liberation period in Austria. The main arguments that this work aims to are as follows: first, as in other countries, left-right cooperation in Austria emerged when common goals were negotiated and agreed upon by both sides. These shared goals, namely the establishment of the republic, the restoration of independence and the recovery of sovereignty in Austria, were overwhelmingly supported by both the left and right with the exception of a few minorities. The consolidation of this cooperation was facilitated by the establishment of the political power structure grounded in the principle of proportionality. Second, in interwar Austria, the conflict and antagonism between the left and right were largely driven by the radicalization of conservatism. The conservative right, fearing social revolution, cultivated close relationships with armed groups, such as local militias(Heimwehr). Particularly after Hitler’s rise to power, the right-wing factions who advocated for the annexation of Austria by Germany became radicalized aligning with the Nazi movement, while the other conservative factions who defended Austria’s independence were radicalized into Austrofascism. Third, Austria’s left-right cooperation developed under directives and occupations of the victorious nations of the two World Wars. After its defeat in World War II, Austria was divided and occupied by the Allied powers including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. Paradoxically, the occupation policies of those nations, especially that of the Soviet Union, contributed significantly to the consolidation of left-right cooperation.
