Abstract

This study begins with a critical reflection on the dominant narrative and historical memory that has depicted European integration within the peace discourse enabling a “Europe without war.” By examining the darker dimensions of European integration—particularly the attempts to reconstruct Europe’s international standing through economic and political integration with Africa during the era of decolonization—this study seeks to illuminate the colonial continuities and institutional reconfigurations concealed beneath the rhetoric of peace and reconciliation. While it is undeniable that European integration was driven by ideals of peace, cooperation, and progress, these developments must also be understood within the broader historical context of imperial dissolution and the reorganization of colonial legacies. From this perspective, the research highlights the notion of “hidden coloniality” embedded in the process of European integration. A particular focus is placed on the Eurafrica project, proposed by integrationists from the 1920s to the 1950s, as a case study that reveals how colonial and imperial ambitions functioned as crucial driving forces within the broader project of European unification.
