Abstract
The Phillips curve, an empirical relation between unemployment and the rate of change of money wage rates, shows the "trade-off" between inflation and unemployment, or feasible policy choices available to the economic stabilization authorities. Initially, the Phillips curve was interpreted as a simple, stable and permanent empirical relationship between the rate of change of money wage rates and unemployment. Subsequent research and experience, however, have revealed that the relation is neither as simple nor as stable as originally thought. Economists have found a variety of shifting short-run Phillips curves, each corresponding to different underlying conditions and expectations in the labor and product markets. Expectations hypothesis introduced the concept of anticipated and unanticipated inflation into the analysis. In this case the main point at issue is the problem of existence or nonexistence of the Phillips curve in the long-run. But they come to an agreement in the opinion that the long-run Phillips curve is steeper than the short-run Phillips curve. The purpose of this study is to estimate the short-run and long-run Phillips curves and test the expectations hypothesis for the Korean economy, 1986-2008. Followings are the results. ① The time-span spent for the formulation of price expectations is very long. ② The expectations hypothesis is supported by our data. ③ There exists a trade-off between inflation and unemployment in the short- run and Phillips curve is downward sloping, but in the long-run Phillips curve is vertical. ④ The unemployment rates which are consistent with price stability are 3.66% and 4.21% in the long-run and short-run, respectively.
