Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the market structure for some low involvement goods with the brand switching data based on confirmatory approach using previously developed dynamic brand choice model. The author tried to find the optimal market structure for both the snack and the can-coffee markets and to provide managerial implication. The panel to track purchase history consists of the university students. Products are twelve snack brands and ten can-coffee brands. The analysis is performed with three levels; Firstly, the expected value of the variety-avoiding intensity is estimated by the beta-binomial distribution based on the observed repurchase frequency. Secondly, the hypothetical market structures with the important product features are designed and the parameters of the conditional brand switching probabilities based on the variety-avoiding intensity and the observed brand switching matrix are estimated. And finally, among the hypothetical market structures, the one which is statistically significant on the likelihood-ratio chi-square statistic and which has the highest modified AIC value is selected as the optimal market structure. The market structure having only one attribute - salty taste - is proved as an optimal structure in the snack market. And the structure with an attribute like instant/ground coffee in the previous researches is selected as the best structure in the can coffee market. The major contribution of this study is as follows: Firstly, it seems that the variety-avoiding behavior rather than the variety-seeking behavior explains brand competition in a product sub-market well. And secondly, the fact that all the five snack and the two can-coffee market structures are statistically significant implies that the model explains the panel data well.
