Abstract
Recognizing the importance of career orientation in practice and the lack of its related studies, this study investigates the relationship between career orientation and organizational commitment. We collected data from 331 employees in 11 domestic manufacturing firms to test hypothesis. A moderating effect of organizational support on these relationships were also examined. We classified career orientation in terms of both boundaryless career and traditional career. The results show us the followings. First, whereas traditional career orientation is positively related to the organizational commitment, boundaryless career orientation has negative influence on organizational commitment. Second, organizational support moderates positively the relationship between boundaryless career orientation and organizational commitment, but not the case for the relationship between traditional career orientation and organizational commitment. This study advances organizational commitment research considering career orientation, suggesting that managers can improve organizational performance in terms of both taking a proper career orientation system and organizational support. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed along with some suggestions for future research.
