초록
This study investigated the occurrence and behavioral responses of finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, to the operation of acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs). Passive acoustic monitoring was conducted from November 2023 to January 2024 to compare porpoise click patterns and behaviors before and after ADDs deployment. The results showed that porpoise presence and click activity decreased following ADDs operation, accompanied by an increase in inter-click intervals. Before deployment, click activity peaked shortly after sunrise, likely reflecting foraging behavior. The overlap between ADDs’ acoustic emissions and the primary echolocation frequencies of porpoises may have interfered with their detection efficiency and altered their acoustic activity patterns. These findings suggest that ADDs influence the acoustic behavior and occurrence of finless porpoises, providing baseline information for evaluating their potential role in bycatch mitigation.
