The Effect of Combined Maekmundong-tang and Western Medicine Treatment on Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: This review evaluated the reported effects of combined Maekmundong-tang and Western medicine treatment on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Methods: A keyword search across databases was conducted to locate articles concerning combined Maekmundong-tang and Western medicine treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. A total of 6 RCTs were selected. A meta-analysis was achieved by synthesizing result data, including Total Effective Rate (TER) and TCM symptom score (TSS), using RevMan Web. Article quality was evaluated using Cochrane’s Risk of Bias (RoB). Results : Six trials were included in the review. The included trials have an uncertain or high risk of bias, so the quality of each study is low. The meta-analysis revealed that across the included studies, treatment groups ([Maekmundong-tang or Maekmundong-tang gami] with Western medicine) showed a more statistically significant effect compared to control groups (Western medicine) in TER (p=0.002 ; TSS-wheezing, TSS-coughing, TSS-expectoration, and TSS-dry mouth and throat (all p<0.00001) ; TSS-feverish sensations in palms, soles, and chest (p=0.002); and TSS-fatigue (p=0.0005). Conclusion: This review suggests that combined Maekmundong-tang and Western medicine can effectively treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
