초록

The use of classifiers is one of the most distinctive features ofModern Chinese. At the same time, however, the appropriate use ofclassifiers is one source of difficulties for second language (L2) learnersof Chinese. Understanding L2 learners’ knowledge and perception ofclassifiers enables us to find better methods to teach Chinese classifiersto L2 learners. The current study empirically investigated the issue of L2learners’ recognition of classifiers using 10 target shape classifiers. Altogether, 60 subjects in Southern China and Hong Kong (30 advancedL2 learners of Chinese for the target group and 30 native (L1) Chinesespeakers for the comparison group) participated in the study. The following three questions were examined in two experiments:(1) Does a correlation exist between advanced L2 learners’ Chineseproficiency and their accuracy in using shape classifiers? (2) Doesadvanced L2 classifier accuracy correlate with native-like mentalrepresentation of shape classifiers? (3) What are the mental images ofthe 10 target shape classifiers for L1 and L2 speakers? In Experiment 1(Classifier Knowledge Test), subjects were asked to judge the accuracy ofa classifier-noun pair, and then to correct the classifier in the incorrectpair. In Experiment 2 (Classifier-Picture Matching Test), subjects had tochoose the best picture for each of the 10 target classifiers out of 14images. The following results were found. First, a low correlation was foundbetween advanced L2 learners’ Chinese proficiency as measured by a cloze test and their ability in using accurate classifiers. Second, however,L2 learners’ accuracy in classifier use was highly correlated with L1speakers’ mental images of shape classifiers. Finally, both L1 speakersand advanced L2 learners share a common representative mental imagefor each of the 10 target shape classifiers. Based on these results, pedagogical implications for shape classifiers were discussed.
