Abstract
Centrifugal force has been one of the most difficult concepts for students to understand. As a basis study for developing more effective teaching-learning strategies for centrifugal force, this research investigated how well undergraduate students understood the concept. Firstly, an analysis was performed on the ways of explaining centrifugal force in physics textbooks. Then the questionnaire, which consisted of two parts, was designed. The first part was about defining centrifugal force, while the second part was about explaining centrifugal force when specific situations were given. This questionnaire was distributed to 63 undergraduate students who major in natural science and engineering in Seoul, Korea. As a result, it was found that many students defined centrifugal force as a fictitious outward force related to centripetal force. Most of them explained centrifugal force unscientifically. For example, they claimed centrifugal and centripetal force acted together on an object with same magnitude but in opposite direction. Likewise, many students could not explain why centrifugal force was a fictitious force or an inertial force. This suggested that the concept of centrifugal force needed to be taught on the basis of Newton's three laws of motion with careful consideration of student understanding.
