Abstract

58 college first year student in Korea and China received formal instruction about relative motion. This study investigated consistency in concepts according to context. A questionnaire comprised of twelve explanation-after-choice items on object direction and velocity based on train movement was developed for the study. The context of each item related to the direction of the object's motion, motion of reference frame, and observer's position. The rate of correctness in selection type was 60%. (Chinese students: 63%, Korean students: 57%) and the item with the highest percentage of correctness was 'moving object with uniform velocity'. However, students did not distinguish whether the observer was inside or outside or whether the train accelerated or decelerated. There were four types of conceptions students used to explain relative motion: velocity, reference frame, inertia and force. According to results, students consistently applied his/her concepts to specific context. The most frequently applied patterns were 'The object and train have uniform movement', 'The object always moves to the right with respect to an observer in rest', and 'The object has uniform movement, but its direction depends on the train's movement.' Similarities and differences between the two countries were identified. In particular, explanation patterns such as ‘The speed of object is the sum of the train’s speed and the object's’ and ‘When the frame of reference is uniform velocity, inertia does not act, and the direction of objects counters the direction of acceleration’ were only found among Korean students. In addition, explanation patterns such as ‘The object always moves with uniform velocity’, and ‘The observer’s reference frame is the train, the ball’s speed and direction depend on the train’s movement’ were only found among Chinese students.
