Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing elementary school students’ judgments and levels of perception regarding science and pseudoscience, as well as to explore the characteristics of scientific thinking that emerge during changes in their perception levels. To achieve this, five scenarios reflecting science and pseudoscience encountered in daily life (one scientific and four pseudo-scientific scenarios) were selected. A descriptive test consisting of two phases was developed: the first phase assessed students’ judgments and perceptions regarding science and pseudoscience, while the second phase examined the validity of the reasons for their judgments in the first phase. A total of 237 fifth- and sixth-grade students participated in the study, and the changes in students’ perception levels between the two phases were analyzed using Wrightmaps based on the Rasch model. Additionally, the characteristics of scientific thinking were examined by analyzing the process of perception-level changes for each scenario. The results revealed that students’ perception levels regarding science and pseudoscience were relatively low. Factors such as the presence of experiments, prior knowledge and experience, the materials presented in the scenarios, and authority influenced their judgments about scientific and pseudo-scientific situations. Furthermore, experiences and learning histories related to the scenarios, sequential provision of knowledge and information, and examples connected to the problem scenarios not only enhanced students’ perception levels regarding science and pseudoscience but also promoted scientific thinking skills, such as recognizing the importance of scientific evidence, critically evaluating the validity of claims, and engaging in evidence-based logical reasoning. Based on these findings, this study proposes instructional strategies to help students accurately distinguish between science and pseudoscience and foster scientific thinking.
