Abstract

This study aimed to explore the impact of the Hands-on Science Classroom(HSC) on the development of science identity among elementary school students. Science identity is defined as a multifaceted concept in which learners develop an interest in science, perceive themselves as people who do science, and their belief in competence and performance. The study was conducted with 77 elementary school students who participated in a ten-session HSC held at a public science museum in South Korea from May to August 2024. Pre- and post-surveys were conducted using an instrument based on the physics identity model of Kim & Im (2024). As a result, students show statistically significant improvements in the overall mean score of science identity, as well as in the dimensions of interest, competence, and performance. The recognition dimension showed a tendency to improve, but this was not statistically significant. Gender-based analysis indicated that male students exhibited significant improvements in recognition and competence, while female students showed significant improvement only in interest. It is also notable that the recognition dimension for female students showed a slight decline. These findings suggest that HSC is effective in enhancing interest, competence, and performance but have limitations in influencing recognition. Furthermore, the differing effects by gender highlight the need for additional educational approaches to support female students’ recognition. Overall, this study confirms that the HSC can contribute to the development of science identity among children and adolescents, while emphasizing the importance of future investigations into program formats, implementation methods, and gender-sensitive educational designs to support the integrated development of science identity.
