Abstract
Background Among heterogeneous low density lipoprotein(LDL), small dense LDL particles can penetrate vascular intima easier and they are more susceptible to oxidation in vitro. These general characteristics are thought to make small dense LDL particles more atherogenic. And small dense LDL is known to be associated with coronary heart disease, but the distribution of mean LDL particle size is not well described in Koreans. Methods LDL subfraction profiles in 93 Korean adult males were estimated by the LipoPrint LDL System(Quantimetrix Corp., Redondo Beach, CA, USA). LDL subclass pattern were designated pattern A when mean LDL particle size was greater than 268Å, pattern B when it was smaller than 265Å, and pattern I when it was between 265Å and 268Å. Results The mean LDL particle size was 265.1±4.7Åin Korean adult males and the prevalence of pattern A, pattern B, and pattern I were 30.1%, 39.8%, and 30.1%, respectively. Mean LDL particle size showed negative correlation with serum concentrations of triglyceride(r=-0.667, P<0.001) and positive correlation with serum concentrations of HDL cholesterol(r=0.479, P<0.001) but had no significant correlation with the concentrations of cholesterol.
