Abstract

This study was to recognize the importance of adapted physical education by the reinterpretation of the relationships between adapted physical education and physical education based on the normalization, and to search for the specialization of special education by adapted physical activity. Now, the position of adapted physical education teacher is not stable at special school district in Korea which is a kind of proof of recognition lack in adapted physical education. If the life of the students with disabilities after graduation is important, the adapted physical activity would be right fitted to the lifelong physical education in long term goal. Therefore, adapted physical educator should be very professional for the students with disabilities. In IDEA(2004), adapted physical education is regarded as a part of special education but the standard to be a teacher of adapted physical education is so strong connected with physical education professionalism. Adapted physical educator should know how to develop not the special teaching methods only but the appropriate teaching methods for the students with disabilities. The appropriate teaching means not special but high quality fit and proper to the level of the students with disabilities. The subject of adapted physical activity is a student with disability. Therefore, the sport academy for the individuals with disabilities is suggested to make the identity of the student with disability more firm than in special education school.
