Abstract

Down Syndrome is reported to cause brain degeneration similar to that of early Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 40 or above with a rapid decline in cognitive function. In particular, Down syndrome is characterized by high levels of slow waves different from the brainwaves of healthy individuals, implying that there may be different responses in accordance with different exercises. This study aimed to identify an effective method of exercise that increases activation of the cerebral cortex by comparing differences in electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings between types of exercise in Down syndrome patients above 40 years of age. In total, 22 Down syndrome patients above 40 years of age that are residing in a nursing home were included in the study. Their brainwaves were measured at rest and 10 minutes after each aerobic and resistance exercise. Brain activity was analyzed by EEG on the left and right hemisphere with independent verification and brainwaves depending on the type of exercise with multivariate analysis. Delta waves showed higher activities upon rest than after aerobic and resistance exercises. Theta wave activities were higher upon rest and after aerobic exercise than after resistance exercise. Alpha and beta waves showed higher activities after aerobic exercises as well as in the left frontal and temporal lobe compared to the right side. In conclusion, in Down syndrome patients characterized with high slow waves at rest, aerobic exercise appeared to be effective in increasing overall brain activity compared to resistance exercises.
