지식인 ‘학술-문화사단’으로서의 신월사(新月社) 성격 재인식의 필요성

이제까지 주로 신시 창작과 관련된 (신)문학사단으로 국한되어 평가되던 신월사는 사실 그 규모와 구성원을 고려하면 지식인 ‘학술-문화사단’으로서 재고찰할 필요가 있다. 특히나 기존 문학 사단으로 평가할 당시의 신시 분야에 국한되어 생각한다고 하더라도, 이들 사단은 단순히 신시 창작에만 공헌한 것이 아니라 그 사단 구성원의 대학교원이란 신분을 이용하여 신시의 학술적 체계화에도 공헌이 있다. 그리하여 본고는 이를 근거로 사단으로서의 신월사의 성격을 인식하는 데 있어 단순히 문단 내의 활동에만 근거하여 판단할 것이 아니라, 그 이면에 존재하는 신월사 성원들이 자리 잡고 있던 배경으로서의 대학공간과 이와 연관된 간행물에서의 활동까지 함께 다루어야 할 필요성을 제기한다. 이를 통해 기존에 쉬즈모와 쉬즈모가 주축이 되어 발간하던 잡지를 중심으로 해석, 서술되던 신월사를 후스(胡適) 및 다른 동인, 그리고 관련된 다른 간행물을 중심으로 다르게 재해석함으로써 신월사 활동기간을 더 확장하고 그 성격과 활동을 더 다양화하고 구체화할 수 있다는 점에 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Previous scholarship has primarily evaluated the Xin Yue Society (新月社) within the framework of (new) literary historiography, focusing on its role as a literary group engaged in the creation of new poetry. However, given the scale of the group and the diverse backgrounds of its members, it is necessary to reconsider Xin Yue Society as an intellectual “academic–cultural society.” Even within the realm of new poetry, the members contributed not only to literary creation but also to the academic systematization of the genre, leveraging their positions as university faculty. This paper argues that understanding the nature of Xin Yue Society requires moving beyond the literary field to include the university spaces in which its members were embedded and their activities in related publications. By reinterpreting the society not solely through Xu Zhimo (徐志摩) and the journals he edited, but also through Hu Shi (胡適), other members, and associated periodicals, this study extends the chronological scope of Xin Yue Society’s activities and offers a more diversified and concrete understanding of its character and functions.
