Abstract
The Literary Research Society (Wenxue Yanjiuhui) sought to establish the social legitimacy of literature without reducing it to an instrument of political agendas. To this end, the Society infused literature with new epistemological and moral values, synthesizing the scientific criterion of “truth and falsehood,” the ethical standard of “right and wrong,” and the aesthetic judgment of “beauty and ugliness.” This synthesis generated an idealized and multidimensional framework in which literature was expected to be truthful, morally sound, and aesthetically beautiful. Although such a premise was difficult to realize in practice, it reflected the Society’s aspiration to elevate literature to the highest possible value. Their rational and ethically grounded approach to literary inquiry was collectively shared and further developed among members, finding expression in both their creative works and theoretical positions. While the Literary Research Society comprised individuals with diverse literary ideals, a common orientation gradually emerged. Under the editorial leadership of figures such as Shen Yanbing and Zheng Zhenduo, a shared discursive framework took shape through processes of mutual recognition among intellectuals. This shared recognition of the zeitgeist helped to consolidate a sense of cohesion within the group, despite their individual differences. This paper examines how the Literary Research Society’s attempt to integrate literature, knowledge, and morality functioned as a mode of literary authority within the poetic field. It focuses in particular on how the values of truth and ethical responsibility shaped literary practice, and how this intellectual-ethical discourse clashed with—or was challenged by—the rise of symbolism, which emphasized personal interiority and aesthetic autonomy. By tracing this process, the study aims to clarify a key historical transition in the formation of modern Chinese poetic discourse.
