Abstract

Su Shi(蘇軾) was an optimist with a macro-philosophical attitude toward life and possessed a highly transcendent way of thinking. Because of this, people came to regard him as a Shenxian(神仙) and even called him by nicknames such as ‘Po Xian(坡仙)’ and ‘Su Xian(蘇仙)’. Nevertheless, as a human being, he could not have been entirely free from the constraints of human nature. Therefore, when he was exiled to the Lingnan(嶺南)—a place reputed to be so harsh that few ever returned alive—he must have inevitably also struggled with psychological conflict and mental anguish. This study, based on such a hypothesis, examined Su Shi’s psychological state during his exile in Huizhou(惠州) and explored, through his poetry, how he might have coped with psychological conflict and mental anguish, if such struggles indeed existed. As a result, the following conclusion can be drawn. First, although Su Shi was a very transcendent man, he also suffered considerable psychological conflict and mental anguish during this period. Second, Su Shi tried to resolve his psychological conflict and mental anguish by seeking escape from the secular world through the philosophy of Daoism(道家). Third, Su Shi composed a large number of responding poems to Tao Yuanming’s(和陶詩), through this, he sought psychological comfort by identifying himself with Tao Yuanming(陶淵明). In summary, even Su Shi, who was regarded as a Shenxian experienced psychological conflict and mental anguish during his exile in Huizhou. However, he primarily resolved these issues by depending on the philosophy of Daoism and Tao Yuanming, and successfully completed his exile without major difficulties.
