초록

Utilizing the theory of planned behavior, this study attempted to understand and predict the level of credit card use among university students. Data came from 500 Korean students’ responses to the Money Attitudes Survey (Sybrowsky, 2007). The descriptive results show that the mean levels of impulsive attitudes and money power variables differed between the at-risk and not-at-risk groups and were statistically significant. For example, the average scores of both the impulsive attitudes and money power indices were higher for the at-risk group (14.3 and 24.8, respectively) than those scores (10.6 and 19.5, respectively) for the group not at-risk. Students 25 to 29 years old were more likely to exhibit risky credit card behavior than students18 to 20 years old. Male students were more likely to be in the at-risk group than female students, suggesting that educational programs may need to target male students. The OLS results show that impulsive attitudes as well as money power attitudes were significant predictors for higher levels of credit card use among university students. In addition, the results indicate that age of the students positively affected higher levels of credit card use. These findings suggest that during the college years, students may develop a negative spending habit that will place them at a higher risk for poor financial health. It is important for consumer educators and policymakers to understand how student attitudes toward money can influence risky credit card behavior. Different ways of providing financial and consumer education designed for university students might be crucial. Further, the credit card industry may need closer regulation and restrictions on the use of credit cards by university students that would help control overuse of credit.
