초록
The study investigated the effect of materialism, credit card use, and self-esteem on compulsive buying tendencies from the perspective of social comparison theory. College students completed a survey (N=222). Simple regressions revealed: (a) a negative relationship between self-esteem and materialism, (b) a negative relationship between self-esteem and compulsive buying, (c) a negative relationship between self-esteem and credit card use, (d) a positive relationship between materialism and credit card use, (e) a positive relationship between materialism and compulsive buying tendencies, and (f) a positive relationship between compulsive buying tendencies and credit card use. Mediating analyses further revealed that self-esteem influenced credit card use directly and indirectly through materialism and compulsive buying, and compulsive buying functioned as a perfect mediator between materialism and credit card use. This study suggests the importance of university counseling services and programs on financial management and well-being in preventing financial problems of college students.
