Abstract

This study was conducted through a series of experiments to examine the effect of attribute diagnosis and preference for products according to the evaluation context of phased decision making. Specifically, Study 1 identified whether there was a difference to the diagnostic evaluation of attributes and the preference for specific alternatives, depending on the context of the assessment. Furthermore for these effects, we tried to identify the influence of perception for cognitive closure on attributes. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the diagnostic evaluation of attribute is changed in the final decision making when the multistage decision making context is given. In other words, if the price is first processed and evaluated, then the relative weight of the quality is increased, and the preference for the high-quality alternative becomes higher. It is also found that the perception of the cognitive closure is mediated by the perception of a certain attribute in the preference reversal of these alternatives. In Study 2, based on the results of Study 1, we investigated the effect of a attribute alignability on product attitude in a stepwise evaluation context. As a result of the research, it was confirmed that the alternative preference is higher when the stepwise evaluation context is given to the product differentiated by the nonalignment attribute.
