Abstract

Today, many companies are actively using smartphone push notification messages to promote their products. Even though smartphone push notifications are low-cost and highly-efficient means of promotion, corporate messages are often considered as annoying, and thus it is not delivered properly to the consumers as they disapprove of the messages. Regarding this issue, we have identified whether the use of Emojis in push notification messages can be used as a way to reduce such consumers' negative responses through experiments. We divide the key components of smartphone push notifications into 1) application provider and 2) push notification messages in order to examine the effect of Emojis on consumers' attitudes toward push notifications. In experiment 1, we confirm that for application providers with more hedonic attribute, using Emojis in push notification messages creates consumers’ positive attitude toward the notifications. Moreover, experiment 2 shows that for push notification messages with more hedonic attributes, using Emojis leads to consumers' positive attitude toward push notifications. We also confirm that these effects occurs by mediating the affective arousal of consumers. Finally, we interpret these results and discuss theoretical contributions and practical implications of our work.
