Abstract

This paper compares and analyzes the two works of Zhang Bilai in the early 1950s: History of Chinese Modern Literature and secondary school literature textbooks. This paper also examines the aspect of the new knowledge system of “modern literature history” after the founding of the People’s Republic of China through the secondary school curriculum. After teaching Chinese literature at Northeast Normal University, Zhang Bilai moved to the People’s Education Press and was in charge of making textbooks for the secondary school literature, which has been used since the fall semester of 1956. Zhang Bilai’s secondary school “Literature” textbook was the only literature textbook in PRC’s secondary school education system, which has maintained “Yuwen” subject. The high school “Literature” textbook compiled at this time follows the system of Chinese literary history. From this, Zhang Bilai can be seen as a figure who participated in the construction of a discipline called “modern literature history” in China, and at the same time disseminated the discipline through the middle school education system. This paper examines how the system of modern literary history, presented in the History of Chinese Modern Literature is distributed through secondary school literature textbooks. It is also a task to look into the way the new knowledge system of the People’s Republic of China was produced and disseminated in the 1950s. Through this, we look at the context in which the subdivision and academic studies of “Chinese modern literature” were formed, as well as what role the education system played in the process.
