Abstract

This study focuses on how the modern Chinese literary works are selected and comprehended in the middle school Chinese textbook of early PRC era. Middle school textbook is a very strong media to transmit the ruling ideology. And in the context of PRC in 50's, the Chinese text also takes part in the evaluation of modern Chinese literature. The most selected were so-called “revolutionary works”, through which students acquire knowledge of revolutionary history. And the reading of these works serve as the act of proving the legitimacy of nation-building. If some works are regarded not fully revolutionary, they are no more selected in the textbook. The fate of Zhu Ziqing's Seeing Father from the Backis a good example. The relation between modern literary works and textbooks are dominated by political ideology. This relation was very predominant in the 50s, but is still valid now.
