초록

This article is an attempt to take a step closer to understanding the peculiarities of the East Asian colonial experience through an analysis of the characteristics of Taiwan's leading left-wing writer Chen Yingzhen's last work, Loyalty & Filiality Park. Loyalty & Filiality Park is a two-axis story of Ma Zhengtao, a Mainlander, and Lin Biao, an old Native Taiwanese, who live in an alley next to a park in Taiwan. In the early 2000s, the so-called “provincial origin problem” between the Native Taiwanese and the Mainlanders was highlighted as an important social issue. Thus, the character depictions can be read as a somewhat conventional narrative between the Native Taiwanese and the Mainlander. However, the message shown through the life history and personality of these two characters is surprisingly more complex than expected. Loyalty & Filiality Park is the last work presented by Chen Yingzhen after devoting 14 years to exploring the issue of fundamental contradictions of Taiwanese society through various research. In other words, the work is a literary response to discussions regarding the fundamental contradictions of Taiwanese society during the mid-1990s. The portrayal of the character, Ma Zhengtao in particular reveals that the fundamental contradiction of Taiwan's contemporary history is deeply rooted in the history of Japan's invasion of the country. Chen Yingzhen claimed that Taiwan's history is an organic part of Chinese history and, at the same time, the most distinctive part of it. This work is a literary proof of his theoretical and ideological arguments. By analyzing Ma Zhengtao’s personality, this paper aims to introduce a number of issues related to the specificity of the East Asian colonial experience, and further raise the need for a re-examination of Taiwan and Korea's ‘Perception of China' in the 20th century.

Abstract

This article is an attempt to take a step closer to understanding the peculiarities of the East Asian colonial experience through an analysis of the characteristics of Taiwan's leading left-wing writer Chen Yingzhen's last work, Loyalty & Filiality Park. Loyalty & Filiality Park is a two-axis story of Ma Zhengtao, a Mainlander, and Lin Biao, an old Native Taiwanese, who live in an alley next to a park in Taiwan.
