Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify dysfunctional money beliefs and to examine the influence of childhood memories about money on money beliefs. Using Klontz Money Script Inventory (KMSI) developed by Klontz et al. (2011) and Moneygrams developed by Furnham et al. (2014), the study conducted an online survey on 681 adult consumers in Korea. Major findings were as follows. First, the study identified four distinct money belief patterns among Korean consumers, i.e., money worship, money status, money distrust, and money vigilance. Mean values of dysfunctional money belief patterns were distributed from 2.02 to 3.90 in a 6-point scale, in the order of money worship, money distrust, money vigilance, and money status. Second, four types of childhood memories were identified, which were named as memory about money as relationship means, source of conflict, secrecy, and parents’ authority. Mean values of the childhood memory types were 2.28 to 3.50, in the order of parents’ authority, source of conflict, secrecy, and relationship means. Third, some associations between childhood memories and sex, age, and income were found. Males and older individuals were more likely to recall childhood memory about money as relationship means, and individuals with higher income were more likely to recall money as parent’s authority and less likely to recall money as a source of conflict and secrecy. Regarding money beliefs, males and older individuals were more likely to consider money as status, but any other association was not found. Finally, regression results showed strong relationship between childhood memories about money and adulthood money beliefs. Source of conflict and secrecy positively influenced money worship belief; relationship means and secrecy positively influenced money distrust belief; source of conflict positively influenced money distrust and money vigilance; and parents’ authority positively influenced money vigilance. These results supported the validity of consumer socialization theory on the formation of money beliefs, indicating that parents are influential socialization factors and that money beliefs result from learning about the meaning and use of money as a child.
