Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find the effects of money beliefs on dysfunctional financial behaviors. On-line questionnaire survey was conducted during March to April in 2016, and 681 subjects, who were aged between 20 and 59, were selected. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was utilized, and main results were as follows. First, consumers’ dysfunctional financial behaviors were measured by 6 points Likert, and the results showed rather low levels(compulsive hoarding, 3.01; workaholic, 2.80; underspending 2.78; financial enabling 2.68; compulsive buying 2.43; financial aversion 2.30; pathological gambling 1.64). Second, consumers’ 3 financial beliefs were measured 6 points Likert, and the results showed range of 3.90~2.02 for money belief’s sub-factors(money-worship, anti-rich, money vigilance, money status), and range of 3.44~2.31 for credit belief’s sub-factors(credit worth, debt acceptance), and range of 4.50~2.69 for consumption belief’s sub-factors(pro-consumption, scarcity mentality, abundance mentality). Third, ‘money status’ sub-factor in money belief and ‘debt acceptance’ sub-factor in credit belief were found to influence on all types of dysfunctional financial behaviors significantly. And ‘pro-consumption’ sub-factor in consumption belief was found to influence on all types of dysfunctional financial behaviors except underspending significantly. Further, other sub-factors in 3 financial beliefs showed significant effects on some types of dysfunctional financial behaviors, Fourth, based on results of financial beliefs’s relative influencing effects on dysfunctional financial behaviors, ‘money belief’ showed the most strong effects on workaholic, compulsive hoarding, underspending, ‘credit belief’ showed the most strong effects on pathological gambling, financial enabling, financial aversion, and ‘consumption belief’ showed the most strong effects on compulsive buying. Above results imply that for weakening of dysfunctional financial behaviors, consumer financial education program emphasized on desirable money and credit beliefs may be necessary for children and adults.
