Abstract

In this study, we applied a qualitative approach in order to examine the financial behaviors of the people with money disorder, their experiences, and the development of such dysfunctional financial behaviors. Participants were recruited via online postings, and were selected using a screening questionnaire. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews and were analyzed by using grounded theory approach. Major finding were as follows. First, the participants showed “overspending and compulsive buying,” “financial denial,” and “financial enabling” to a notable extent. Interestingly, the participants showed an overlap of the two disorder types, and that exacerbated the financial problem even more. Financial enabling, which is a type of relational money disorder, was shown as behaviors like paying for other people’s meals at the restaurant or giving excessive gifts to friends and family members and so on. These behaviors resulted in financial, relational, and psychological consequences, such as ‘excessive debt,’ ‘conflict with family,’ ‘worry and anxiety,’ and ‘self-blame and guilt.’ Second, it was shown that the participants had the money-worshiping money script, the money status money script, the “self-serving money script,” and the “self-image money script.” The self-serving money script can be defined as a money belief that rationalizes their overspending, and the self-image money script can be defined as a money belief that recreates self-image to be carefree and not stingy about money. The participants could identify childhood events including financial trauma such as the extreme collapse of spending desire, bankruptcy of parents, and parental behaviors and messages such as parents’ dysfunctional financial behaviors, misleading financial education, and taboo against money that affected money beliefs. Third, low self-esteem and deep shame are intimately involved in the process in which participants' dysfunctional beliefs affect dysfunctional financial behavior. Participants seem to have a series of dysfunctional belief systems that connect money with their self-esteem and shame through parental influences and childhood experiences. Thus, their dysfunctional financial behaviors functioned as a means of defending and satisfying themselves, avoiding shame, and securing self-esteem and presence.
