Abstract
Previous research on unit effect has shown that numerical information depending on units influences consumers’ purchase decision making in various ways. The current research conducted two empirical studies to investigate the impact of numeric unit of price on price level of selected menu. The results showed that numeric unit effect of price on selected menu price is moderated by menu alignment type. Specifically, in study 1, there was no difference in price choice between large and small numeric unit of price when the menu prices are aligned with one column. However, under the two columns alignment, participants were more likely to choose higher level of price menu when the prices were shown in small numeric unit than those were shown in large numeric unit. In addition, study 2 examined that the numeric unit effect of price affects general perceived price and selected menu price varies depending on the menu price alignment.
