Abstract
The purposes of this study are to identify the level of overconfidence and to examine the relationship of overconfidence and financial fraud of financial consumers in Korea. This study examines four components of victimization; physical proximity to the motivated offender, exposure to the high-risk environment, target attractiveness and capable guardianship, and their relations with financial fraud through overconfidence. We analyzed 2015, 2016, 2017 waves of Fund Investor Survey collected by the Korea Investors Protection Foundation. The main results of this study are as follows: First, on average 3.2% of financial consumers are scammed in each year during our study periods. The highest loss was one billion won with an average of 22 million won. The fraud type which most often occurred was tele-financial fraud (voice phishing). Second, those who prepare for retirement and those with average monthly household income with less than 3 million won or more than 7 million won were more likely to experience financial fraud. Third, regression analyses report those who prepare for retirement, those with more investments are more likely to experience financial fraud. Compared to low income household with average household income less than 3 million won, those with household income more than 3 million won are less likely to experience financial fraud. Those with higher overconfidence and with more financial investments are more likely to experience financial fraud. The risk of financial fraud is higher for those who invest in derivatives and mutual funds. This study found a relationship between overconfidence and financial fraud and factors for financial fraud by types of financial investments. The results of this study provide implications for financial consumer protection policy and education.
