Abstract

Humans form an individual's cognitive framework by comparing and applying the information of every moment with the existing knowledge system. Even in consumption situations, consumers tend to process in connection with their knowledge system. As such, the degree of congruity between the information of products and the cognitive framework may have a significant influence on consumers. By explaining the launching of inconsistent products between elements as ‘Incongruity marketing’, this study explored the consumer reactions in incongruent food product. For this, it was expected that emotion of fun could be major role. The incongruity in the schema consistency effect theory was applied, and the level of incongruity was classified according to the relevance between elements and ease of prediction. According to the low, medium, and high level of incongruity, Perceived fun, product/brand attitude, and purchase intention were confirmed. As results, it was found that the more excessive the incongruity by the food product, the less fun experienced, and the lower the product/brand attitude and purchase intention. That is, it was a negative linear relationship with the incongruity level. Furthermore, perceived fun emotions partially played a mediating role in the effect of incongruity on participants. Specifically, the lower the level of incongruity, the higher the perceived fun, which led to higher attitudes and purchase intentions, and the opposite result was confirmed when the level of incongruity was excessive. This study confirmed consumer reactions that vary depending on the level of product incongruity. In particular, it is meaningful that it explained that emotions can play a major role in the effect of incongruity, and that the effects of consumer emotions were subdivided by verifying the influence of ‘fun’. Finally, this study attempted to explain a comprehensive concept that encompasses a wide range of combination of product by proposing as ‘Incongruity marketing’. Based on this, it is possible to provide major reference points for effective implementation of strategies and promote universal application in practical context.
