Abstract

This study analyzes factors affecting the viewing intention toward a classical music performance and the amount of willingness-to-pay (WTP) of the respondents under pay-what-you-want (PWYW) pricing system. The explanatory variables included cultural capital, social norm, moral norm, music-related educational experience, and demographic characteristics of the respondents. The estimation was performed using the Heckman two-step regression analysis. As a result, the viewing intention under the PWYW pricing system increased by 25.4%p compared to that under the fixed pricing system. The expected revenue also increased. This suggests that the PWYW pricing system in classical music performances can be a good strategy to expand potential audience and to increase profit of the concert. “Father’s education”, “own education”, “activity”, “attitude” among cultural capital variables were found to be statistically significant in the viewing intention under the PWYW. Regarding the amount of WTP, “own education”, “gender”, “moral norm” were found to be significant variables. Also, the test for sensitivity of the results was completed by removing alternatively one of explanatory variables in the second stage equation. It was found that statistical significance of the variables were not changed. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first in South Korea that combines the PWYW pricing system with the classical music performance, and therefore, it will provide a clue about whether PWYW can be applied to the sector. In addition, it is expected to provide valuable information in comparing the viewing intention and total revenue under fixed price versus PWYW in the field of performing arts. It will also show how consumers’ cultural capital, social norm, moral norm, and demographic characteristics affect their behavior under the PWYW.
