Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to identify factors that play a crucial role in theater advocacy. Accordingly, the study examines customer satisfaction, a key variable in the realm of performing arts. It explores the impact of theater service factors, considered antecedent variables of customer satisfaction, on advocacy. Furthermore, this research meticulously investigates the mediating effects of customer satisfaction. The study has two significant differentiating aspects. Firstly, it explores perceived social experience as a precursor variable for customer satisfaction. Existing research predominantly focuses on factors related to the quality of performances or theater facilities when investigating theater service factors. However, a theater experience is unique, involving group visits, shared applause with fellow attendees, and social interactions. Thus, this study introduces perceived social experience as a theater service factor to compare with perceived performance quality and perceived theater facility quality. Secondly, the study examines theater advocacy as an outcome variable for customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction is a crucial variable in generating advocacy behavior, particularly for entities like performing arts organizations and theater management. While existing research often emphasizes the importance of the performance itself, studies specifically addressing the impact on theater advocacy are lacking. Therefore, this study not only investigates performing arts advocacy but also explores its effects on theater advocacy. This provides an opportunity to examine whether the influence structure on performing arts advocacy can be applied to theater advocacy as well. The research involved conducting a survey with consumers who had experienced performing arts, resulting in a dataset of 426 responses. Structural equation modeling was employed for analysis, hypotheses were tested, and mediating effects were scrutinized for significance. The findings reveal that among the theater service factors, both perceived performance quality and perceived social experience significantly impact customer satisfaction to a similar extent. Conversely, perceived theater facility quality did not demonstrate statistical significance concerning customer satisfaction. Furthermore, customer satisfaction strongly influences both performing arts advocacy and theater advocacy. Among the theater service factors, perceived performance quality and perceived social experience have indirect effects on performing arts advocacy and theater advocacy through customer satisfaction, indicating complete mediating effects. In contrast, perceived theater facility quality did not exert a significant impact on customer satisfaction and demonstrated a direct impact on theater advocacy. Based on these results, interesting points were discovered. Firstly, among the theater service factors, both perceived performance quality and perceived social experience exert similar influences on customer satisfaction. Perceived performance quality is a variable often regarded as the most important in previous research. This suggests that perceived social experience may be an equally crucial factor for consumers in the context of performing arts. Secondly, perceived social experience indirectly influences performing arts advocacy through customer satisfaction. However, the direct impact of perceived social experience on performing arts advocacy showed only marginal significance. This indicates that perceived social experience may be a factor influencing performing arts advocacy both directly and indirectly. Thirdly, perceived theater facility quality does not impact customer satisfaction but directly influences theater advocacy. This highlights the importance of facility quality in influencing theater advocacy. In contrast, facility quality did not significantly affect performing arts advocacy. This suggests a difference in the influencing factors between performing arts advocacy and theater advocacy. Fourthly, customer satisfaction plays a pivotal role in various relationships. Particularly, perceived performance quality and perceived social experience seem to play a crucial role in the relationship between customer satisfaction and theater advocacy. Lastly, customer satisfaction has a robust impact on both performing arts advocacy and theater advocacy. However, customer satisfaction appears to have a greater impact on performing arts advocacy than on theater advocacy. This implies that consumers, after achieving satisfaction, are more likely to advocate for the performance rather than the venue. This research makes a significant contribution to understanding customer satisfaction and advocacy behavior in the realm of performing arts. From an academic perspective, it offers a comprehensive examination of the mechanisms involving theater service factors, customer satisfaction, performing arts advocacy, and theater advocacy. Importantly, it highlights the significance of perceived social experience as a key factor in theater service and underscores the role of customer satisfaction in affecting both performing arts and theater advocacy. From a practical standpoint, the study provides recommendations for creating advocacy behavior and enhancing customer satisfaction for performing arts organizations and theater management.
