Abstract

Attitudes toward money play a crucial role in determining an individual's financial well-being through their spending habits, savings, and investment choices. However, discussions on attitudes toward money have been neglected in Korea. This study reviewed 121 papers, comprising 29 domestic and 92 international studies conducted since 2010. The study categorized the analysis targets by research topics, related variables, research subjects, and the scales used, while also analyzing trends and differences over time. Based on the research results, the following suggestions for future domestic research were made: First, it is necessary to develop and apply an attitude-toward-money scale that reflects the characteristics of domestic consumers and aligns with specific research objectives. Second, future research should utilize appropriate scales that consider the measurement goals of previously developed scales. Third, domestic studies tend to have a more limited range of related variables compared to overseas studies, so attempts to verify relationships with a wider variety of variables are necessary. Fourth, the research model should be diversified to broadly test the role of attitudes toward money, including mediating and moderating variables, beyond merely verifying independent and dependent variables. This study suggests that a variety of follow-up studies are needed to explore effective ways to improve attitudes toward money and enhance the effectiveness of financial education and policies.
