Abstract
This study analyzed the types of digital supporter usage among senior consumers(aged over 55) in Korea and examined how the differences in these types affect their digital transaction behavior in the mobile environment. Data from the “Report on the Digital Divide 2021” was used for analysis. As a result, first, the senior consumers were classified into ‘all-use type’, ‘professional institution preference type’, and ‘family preference type’, according to the pattern in their use of each supporters. The usage level of support of ‘all-use type’, which use all supporter types in variety, was the highest, and their levels of mobile competency and mobile transaction behavior such as m-commerce and mobile banking were also the highest among three. Meanwhile, the ‘family preference type’ consumers’ levels of digital supporter usage, mobile competency, and mobile transaction behavior were the lowest and the ‘professional institution preference type’ consumers were somewhere in between. This finding showed that using specialized and formal supporters was more helpful to improvement of senior consumers’ mobile competency and increase of their mobile transaction behaviors rather than using family members as their digital supporters. Furthermore, there were differences in demographic characteristics for each type, which showed that the divide in their supporter utilization was also affected by their demographic vulnerabilities. Second, the moderating effect of the usage type of digital supporters between mobile competency and mobile transaction behavior was confirmed. The difference between the ‘family preference type’ and the ‘all-use type’ was statistically significant, which means that the improvement of mobile competency of the ‘family preference type’ consumers did not sufficiently lead to their active mobile transaction behavior compared to the other two types. There was no significant difference between ‘all-use type’ and ‘professional institution preference type’. These results showed that when family members are used as main digital supporters for senior consumers, they worked as ‘proxy users’ who used online services on behalf of the elderly in their family. Consequently, senior consumers’direct use of mobile transaction did not increase to the extent that their mobile competency improved through the assistance. Based on the results, we recommended policies promoting senior consumers’ digital inclusion through the public institution and professional personnel rather than relying only on private supporters such as family. In particular, it is proposed to strengthen support activities to help seniors with more vulnerable demographic characteristics to prevent the deepening digital divide among them.
