Abstract

The phenomenon of ‘album hoarding’ within K-Pop fandom culture has emerged as a significant social controversy following reports of large quantities of a particular K-Pop idol group’s album being discarded en masse on the streets of Shibuya, Japan. Album hoarding refers to the practice by fandom consumers of purchasing a considerable volume of albums at once, which is largely driven by the K-Pop industry’s predatory marketing strategies designed to inflate album sales. These strategies often include offering exclusive merchandise or participation in fan- signing events as incentives for mass purchases. Such practices not only engender considerable environmental concerns due to the disposal of surplus physical albums but also promote irrational consumption patterns among predominantly adolescent fandom consumers. This study aims to elucidate the psychological mechanisms underpinning consumer participation in album hoarding within the K-Pop industry through qualitative data collected via in-depth interviews. Utilizing grounded theory, this research synthesizes the antecedents and consequences of album hoarding behavior into a comprehensive paradigm model. The findings reveal that the principal motivations for album hoarding align with functions delineated by the Attitude Functions Theory, including utilitarian functions (e.g., acquiring photocard merchandise, gaining access to fan-signing events), self-expression functions (e.g., identity formation during adolescence), ego-defensive functions (e.g., escapism), and knowledge functions (e.g., contributing to the perceived success of K-Pop idols). Furthermore, the exploitative marketing strategies employed by the K-Pop industry, alongside the social pressures within fandom communities, exacerbate the prevalence of album hoarding. Recurrent purchasing behavior leads to economic strain, diminishing satisfaction, and logistical challenges related to managing the accumulated albums, ultimately deterring fans from sustaining their fandom engagement. Some consumers have sought alternative fandom activities outside of K-Pop or have reduced their participation in album hoarding as a coping mechanism. This study underscores the necessity of reevaluating the current sales strategies within the K-Pop industry and advocates for a shift toward more sustainable practices. By examining the pathological consumption patterns associated with album hoarding and elucidating the psychological drivers of such behavior, this research contributes to the discourse on the social responsibility of entertainment corporations in the context of the global K-Pop phenomenon.
