디지털 환경의 발달로 인간 행동과 디지털 플랫폼 간의 관계에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 메타버스는 기존 소셜미디어와는 다른 독특한 특성을 가진 새로운 플랫폼으로, 아바타를 통해 새로운 정체성을 형성하고 현실에서 경험할 수 없는 상호작용을 제공함으로써 개인적․사회적 욕구를 충족하는 대체 공간으로 주목받고 있다. 기존 연구들은 주로 소셜미디어를 중심으로 사회적 배제가 디지털 플랫폼 사용에 미치는 영향을 논의해 왔으나, 메타버스 정황에서의 논의는 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 사회적 배제 경험이 메타버스 사용 의도에 미치는 영향을 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연구 1에서는심층 인터뷰를 통해 사회적 배제 경험과 메타버스 사용 행동에 관한 주요 패턴을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 사회적 배제는 메타버스 사용 동기에 강하게 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용하며, 개인 특성, 특히 성별에 따라 메타버스 사용행동이 달라지는 경향이 확인되었다. 연구 2에서는 온라인 실험을 통해 사회적 배제 유형이 메타버스 사용 의도에 미치는 영향을 정량적으로 검증하였다. 무시와 거절 모두 메타버스 사용 의도를 증가시키는 경향이 확인되었으며, 성별에 따라 이러한 관계가 다르게나타났다. 남성은 무시당했을 때 메타버스 사용 의도가 유의하게 증가한 반면, 여성은 거절당했을 때 메타버스 사용의도가 증가하였다. 본 연구는 메타버스가 사회적 배제를 극복하는 새로운 심리적 공간으로 기능할 수 있음을 실증적으로 밝혀내며, 사회적 배제 경험이 메타버스와 같은 플랫폼에서 사용자 행동에 미치는 영향을 체계적으로 분석함으로써 기존 연구의 한계를 보완하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 사회적 배제, 성별 차이, 메타버스 사용이라는 세 가지 주요 변수를통합적으로 탐구함으로써 메타버스의 개인적․사회적 기능에 대한 이론적 이해를 심화하였으며, 디지털 환경에서의인간 행동 연구와 실무적 적용 가능성을 확대하는 데 기여하였다.
Abstract
The advancement of digital environments has intensified interest in the interplay between human behavior and digital platforms. Unlike traditional social media, the metaverse enables identity formation through avatars and offers unique interactions beyond real-life experiences. This study investigates how social exclusion influences metaverse usage intention, addressing a gap in existing research. Study 1 used in-depth interviews to explore patterns linking exclusion experiences with metaverse behaviors. Results showed that exclusion strongly motivates metaverse use, with gender shaping behavioral differences. Study 2 employed an online experiment to test exclusion types. Both neglect and rejection increased usage intention, but effects varied: men’s intention rose significantly when neglected, while women’s intention rose when rejected. These findings suggest that the metaverse functions as a psychological space to cope with social exclusion. By integrating social exclusion, gender, and metaverse usage, the study extends theoretical understanding of the metaverse’s personal and social roles and highlights implications for digital behavior research and practice.
