초록

The Hong Kong actor, Stephen Chow, in the past, was considered as merely an actor who gained popularity by starring in low comedy. However, in the present, he has become a cultural icon and a cultural phenomenon not only in Hong Kong but also in mainland China. It is required to carefully analyze the fandom phenomenon on Stephen Chow, which started from Hong Kong and spread to China with rapidity, since, in China, this phenomenon has actually developed to a kind of cultural “Syndrome” beyond the public's simple enthusiastic response on well-made cultural products. The so-called “Stephen Chow Syndrome” has been created by combining the background of Hong Kong in space and time and the social and historical context of mainland China. Thus, it is needed to analyze the syndrome carefully, since it exposes “sensitive flesh” of the societies of Hong Kong and China in an aspect and reflects the public's inner desires and ambivalent psychology in another aspect. In the China's “Stephen Chow Syndrome”, it is remarkable that the Stephen Chow's deviant comedy does not make the masses enthusiastic about it, but the public who are eager to deviate from realities create the cultural icon, Stephen Chow. In this paper, based on awareness of these concept, “Stephen Chow Syndrome” and the social and cultural context surrounding the syndrome are examined. First, it is studied how the views on Stephen Chow has been changed in Hong Kong and mainland China, and the inherent meanings in the hidden side of the change is also reviewed. Next, it is examined that the problems of the former views in which the Stephen Chow's comedy has been analyzed based on the postmodernism. Further, an alternative way is suggested to interpret it. Also, it is examined the point where the relationship between Stephen Chow and the public is qualitatively changed to be considered as a “Syndrome” and the ambivalence of the syndrome in Chinese society.
