Rethinking Quarrel between the New and the Old and “New Literature” in the New Youth

The Quarrel between The new and The old was a important controversial issue in the May Fourth new literature movement. Many studies of this Quarrel viewed hitherto it as the rejection of a traditional literature and whole westernization. But the Quarrel between The new and The old in this period was greatly influenced by the First War and the Republican crisis of china. The May Fourth new literature movement cannot be explained simplistically a stage of reform in china since the late Qing. The May Fourth new literature movement shows a clear change of direction. This essay analyze the idea of literature of the major advocates of new literature debate in the New Youth. especially, I will analyze their review of ‘The old literature’ and show a difference of opinion among them. also I illuminate that The uncertainness of their view of criticism and divergence of opinion came from the indefinite view of ‘The new’.
