Abstract

Contemporary society is faced with two mutually incompatible trends: globalization and localization. Should we call the former centripetal, the latter can be labeled as centrifugal. In other words, globalization aims at the construction of the global village where the idiosyncratic features of local cultures being inevitably annihilated. Localization, on the other hand, implicates the tendency to run counter to this ‘new’ postcolonial discourse. This paper attempts to locate the eclectic solution for this ideological conflict. After all, can we truly make all things equal while preserving the uniqueness of individuality? Along this line, I am proposing the necessity of the paradigmatic (or epistemological) shift as a means to get away from the pitfall of the dichotomous way of thinking. Buddhist and Taoist philosophical assumptions will be thoroughly examined to reinforce my theoretical positionality.
