Abstract

This essay is on the transformations in the discourse of civilization in the early twentieth century and its complex relationship with discourse change of Dongfangzazhi(Eastern Miscellany). Xinhai Revolution is chinese inner revolution. It began with the Wuchang Uprising, representing the beginning of the end for the Qing dynasty and thousands of years of imperial rule in China, and the goal of that, for its leaders, was to establish a democratic republic in China. But in the world view, it's meaning had much more complex context. This was reflected in Dongfangzazhi(Eastern Miscellany), in particular, after complete reforming in 1911. This journal considered chinese matters carefully in the view of world civilization, drew four main key words as like revolution, socialism, fostering nation's mentality, and Oriental culture. These discourses accorded some new context and meanings to the Xinhai Revolution. This essay deals with these discourses of Dongfangzazhi(Eastern Miscellany) vol.8(from April, 1911 to June, 1912), and analyze its relationship with Xinhai Revolution. Ultimately, I will seek to find another point of view on the chinese thought discourse in the 1910s.
