Abstract

The physician licensing issue is one of the most important legal challenges that should be effectively resolved to expand the practice of Telemedicine across state lines in the United States as well as other countries such as European Union (EU). In addition, it is still a hot issue in certain countries such as South Korea, which is trying to allow Telemedicine between doctors and patients remotely on a time limited basis to evaluate the efficiency of Telemedicine in Korea. The licensing consideration is so important because it protects patients and providers at the same time by requiring providers to have minimum academic and medical knowledge. A licensing requirement may reduce legal conflicts resulting from medical negligence. It is necessary and critical for providers to establish certain or specific requirements before providing Telemedicine services to patients. However, it is difficult to establish one uniform standard regarding Telemedicine licensing in the United States because each jurisdiction has different systems or guidelines for regulating medical professionals under their circumstances. I will introduce four non-profit organizations first and then analyze its own advantages and weakness related to physician licensing in the United States in detail.
