Abstract

This article seeks a diachronic perspective of modern China through the concept of Imagined Empire. Modern China, which was incorporated into the western-centered world order, tried to create a unified nation by integrating the dominance of the Qing empire, which is a national concept that did not exist in the past. In terms of the Han Chinese nation, it becomes a vast empire that transcends its dominance, and in terms of the traditional empire, it becomes a unified nation that has been separated into nations and regions. This state was not a separation from the Qing Empire to the Han Chinese state, but a concept born in the process of rebuilding modern China in the way of the Western nation state by the Han elites who succeeded the dominance of the Qing empire. This is not a real or model case in Chinese history, but an Imagined Empire advocated by combining the narrative of the Qing Empire`s Tianxia and the narrative of the Western nation state. As an Imagined Empire, modern China is more like a vision of a nation to be built in the future than a nation in reality.
