程門 중용 주석의 신비화 경향에 대한 주자의 비판

이 글은 程門의 『중용』 주석에서 보이는 신비화 경향에 대한 주자의 비판을 추적 분석하고, 그 사상사적 의미를 구명하는데 목적이 있다. 주자는 자신의 『사서장구집주』에서 정문의 관점을 대대적으로 인용한다. 이 때문에 程朱 계열의 연속성이 일반적으로 인정된다. 그러나 주자 사서학의 형성과정을 추적해보면, 그가 오히려 정문 주석을 적극 비판한다는 것을 쉽게 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 그 비판의 내용은 주로 ‘이단’ 혹은 ‘불교’라는 것이다. 정문의 『중용』 주석에서 주자가 비판하는 내용은 주로 신비화 경향과 내면화 경향이다. 여기서 신비화 경향에 대한 비판이란 정문 주석이 『중용』의 일상적이고 상식적인 내용을 지나치게 어려운 것으로 관념화 한다는 의미이다. 이는 특히 내면의 도덕성을 찾아서 확보할 것을 주장하는 도남학과 호상학의 내면화 경향과 연결된다. 주자는 정문의 이러한 경향을 불교와 비슷한 것으로 규정하면서 ‘이단’이라고 비판한다. 일상의 구체적인 현실을 떠나 초월적인 도덕성을 찾으려는 시도가 모두 유학의 본질적인 성격에 부합하지 않는다고 본 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to track and analyze Zhuxi’s criticism of The tendency to mystify of Cheng School’s Zhongyong Comments and to investigate its historical meaning. In his book, Zhuxi extensively cites the perspective of the Cheng school. For this reason, the continuity of the Cheng-Zhu series is generally recognized. However, tracking the formation process of Zhuxi's Study of Four Books, it can be easily confirmed that he actively criticizes the commentary of the Cheng school. And the content of the criticism is mainly about ‘heresy’ or ‘Buddhism’. In the commentary on Zhongyong of the Cheng School, what Zhuxi criticizes is mainly about the tendency to mystify, internalize, and indifference to norms. Zhuxi’s criticism of the trend of mystification means that the commentator of the Cheng school conceptualizes the everyday and common sense contents of Zhongyong as too difficult. This is particularly linked to the trend of internalization of Daonan School(道南學) and Hushang School(湖湘學) to find and secure inner morality. All attempts to find transcendent morality regardless of everyday reality are not consistent with the essential character of Confucianism.
