Abstract
This paper tries to shed light on the status of the nature of asymmetry between the left and the right anchoring of morphological and phonological phenomena in English and Korean. We show that even though Anchor-Left is much more prominent than Anchor-Right, Anchor-Right should be considered a legitimate constraint because it plays an integral role in the analysis of truncation & aphesis in English and truncation, partial reduplication, and hypocoristic formation in Korean. In some cases, Anchor-Right ranks equally with Anchor-Left; in other cases, Anchor-Right dominates Anchor-Left or vice versa. This dynamic ranking interaction between them clearly indicates that Anchor-Right is a well-grounded universal constraint and the universality of a constraint is not decided by its prominence in grammar.
